March 3, 8.00 pm

dir. Parvez Sharma/2015/79’ (India, Saudi Arabia, USA)
«My mother never forgave me for being gay. I’m now faced with the crysis of faith. I need to prove that I can be a good muslim – and be gay».
A Sinner in Mecca is not a simply documentary film, it’s a confession of a man, who got at the crossroads. Film director Parvez Sharma is a devout muslim and a gay as well. During his Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca (Saudi Arabia), where gays are judged to die, Sharma searches for the answer: can the religion accept people like him? Sharma documents his journey on an iPhone and two smuggled tiny cameras. On the streets of Mecca he joins 4 million other Muslim pilgrims from different traditions of Islam, fulfilling a lifelong calling for Hajj.
The world premiere was at the 2015 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. There was required to add security in response to online hate mail and death threats against the director. Anyway, since that A Sinner in Mecca continues to play at many film festivals around the world. Its European premiere was at the UK’s Sheffield Doc/Fest where it was nominated for a Grand Jury Award.Film will be demonstrated in English with Belarusian subtitles.
